Tajikistan has reportedly suffered $3.52 million in losses due to illegal cryptocurrency mining activities during the first half of 2025. The country’s Attorney General, Khabibullo Vokhidzoda, revealed that these damages were primarily related to the unauthorized use of electricity by crypto miners, with the state covering the cost to compensate energy providers for the losses incurred.

Individuals have been importing mining equipment into the country and setting up operations without proper authorization. Four to five criminal cases targeting the use of mining equipment have been opened against individuals, reflecting the growing concern over this practice.

While Tajikistan has yet to define a clear regulatory stance on digital assets, unauthorized crypto mining has become a persistent issue. Authorities report the annual closure of mining farms operating in private homes and businesses, often accompanied by penalties for those involved.

Most of the reported cases relate to the illegal consumption of electricity. Since January 2025, more than 190 criminal cases have been opened concerning the unauthorized use of electricity, with a majority involving crypto mining.
